Still Playing With My Chemistry Set

I got my first chemistry set as a Christmas present from my grandmother
at the age of six, and have had the good luck of being able to
play
with it right up to the present (although not as much as I would like!)
In this presentation I will discuss two projects where the literature and
my own preconceptions were overturned by getting my hands dirty at the bench:
• Steric-driven generation of hydrogen - a cautionary tale for "black-box theoretical
chemists"
• Forming carbon-metal bonds: just add water!
