The 610 th meeting of the Sydney University Chemical Society will be held on Wednesday 10th August in Le Fèvre Lecture Theatre 2 of the Chemistry Building on the campus of The University of Sydney. The speaker will be Dr Alison Green editor of the Australian Journal of Chemistry, who will present a lecture entitled:
Scientific Publishing in a Time of Rapid Development
Editor, Aust. J. Chem.
Reading, writing, and publishing papers are an integral part of the scientific process: Writing a paper focuses your thoughts; peer review and editorial input refine your theories; and finally, having your paper read by other scientists can spark their own ideas. These basic principles of publishing have remained unchanged. On the other hand, the recent development of internet technologies-such as online submission and peer review, html, electronic linking of references-has changed the face of all three parts of the process. I will present an editorial viewpoint of the publication process within the context of my own experience as a scientist and editor in Germany (where I was associate editor of Advanced Materials) and Australia (where I am the editor of Australian Journal of Chemistry). My founding of a new journal in 2004 (Environmental Chemistry) illustrates how technological developments have led to rapid progress in journals publishing. This progress is spawning new publishing ideas and paradigms, from bundling of papers to preprint servers and open access. What's worked so far? What hasn't? What's next? Why should I worry?
