I joined UNSW in December 1992 after a short industrial career in the UK. In this talk I shall discuss the research (and the personalities) that helped me build up a research group from a zero activity base, through a small academic research group to what is now a thriving research centre.I will discuss some of the scientific projects and collaborations that helped produce the publications for which I was honoured to receive the H.G.Smith Medal. In addition to the chemistry and science behind our success, I will also talk about the importance of a team work culture to our current creativity and output.
