The 602nd meeting of the Sydney University
Chemical Society will be held on Wednesday
11th August
in Le Fèvre Lecture Theatre 2 of the
Chemistry Building on the campus of the University of Sydney.
The
speaker will be Prof. Brice Bosnich from the University of Chicago
who will present the 2004 Francis Lions lecture.
Thirty years ago it was believed that the cell was a vessel where chemical reactions occurred and it was assumed that if we understood these transformations we would understand how the cell functioned. Since then, it has been discovered that the operation and organization of cells is controlled by molecular motors and molecular machines. These motors serve to transport and organize molecular cargo, they can drive chemical reactions and they are responsible for biological movement. The lecture will discuss a number of biological molecular motors, and will describe their method of operation. Attempts to make synthetic molecular motors will be described.
