The 599th meeting of the Sydney University Chemical Society will be held on Wednesday 12th May in Le Fèvre Lecture Theatre 2 of the Chemistry Building on the campus of the University of Sydney. The speaker will be Prof. Karl Wieghardt from the Max Plank Institute for Bioinorganic Chemistry, Mülheim, Germany.
Coordination Chemistry of Life
Transition metal ions such as V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn constitute the active sites of metalloproteins which are in many cases enzymes (catalysts). Coordination chemists can mimick their structures and reactivities. This is shown for galctose oxidase (Cu) and Photosystem II (Mn).
