The 585th meeting of the Sydney University Chemical Society will be held on Wednesday 16th October in Le Fèvre Lecture Theatre 2 of the Chemistry Building on the campus of The University of Sydney. The speaker will Professor Julius Rebek of The Scripps Research Institute, who will present the 2002 Howard Lecture.

2002 Howard Lecture

Molecular Assembly and Encapsulation

Julius Rebek, Jr.

The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology and Department of Chemistry,
The Scripps Research Institute, USA

How, and why molecules fit together defines the science of molecular recognition, and this lecture involves a modern form of the science – molecular hosts that completely surround their guests. These assemblies are known as encapsulation complexes; they form reversibly on timescales of milliseconds to hours, long enough for many types of interactions and even reactions to take place within them. A complex of cyclohexane inside a capsule held together by hydrogen bonds is shown below.
