The 584th meeting of the Sydney University Chemical Society will be held on Wednesday 14th August in Le Fèvre Lecture Theatre 2 of the Chemistry Building on the campus of The University of Sydney. The speaker will be Harry A Goodwin from the School of Chemical Sciences, University of NSW, who will present the 2002 Francis Lions Lecture.

2002 Francis Lions Lecture

Ligand Induced Variable Spin State in Six-Coordinate Iron(II)

Harold A. Goodwin

The design of sexadentate chelating agents is perhaps Lions' best known work in the field of coordination chemistry. But he also established some important principles governing the synthesis and coordination of tridentates, particularly those which are essentially planar. Such tridentates are remarkably effective in producing six-coordinate cobalt(II) and iron(II) derivatives which display electronic spin crossover. Variations within the ligand structure can influence strongly not only the actual spin state of the metal ion, but also the nature of the spin transition curves displayed by crossover systems. The lecture will focus on aspects of the structure which are likely to contribute to the degree of cooperativity associated with transitions in solid iron(II) systems.
