Dr Lou Rendina is a graduate of the Australian National University (ANU) where he received his BSc (Hons I) and PhD degrees in bioinorganic chemistry under the supervision of Prof. J.A. Broomhead.

Lou was awarded an ANU-IAS postdoctoral fellowship to work in the area of organoplatinum-hydroxo chemistry with Prof. M.A. Bennett, FRS.

In 1993 he was awarded a prestigious NSERC Canada International Fellowship and he embarked upon a detailed study of the oxidative addition reaction with Prof. R.J. Puddephatt, FRS.

He returned to the ANU late 1995 as a Visiting Fellow, and in 1996 he was appointed as a Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Adelaide and promoted to the position of Senior Lecturer in 2000.

In late 2003 he moved to the School of Chemistry at The University of Sydney  where his research interests include the synthesis and DNA-binding properties of platinum(II)-carborane complexes, culminating in the recent discovery of two new classes of DNA-binding agents for potential use in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT)

In collaboration with Prof. Margaret Harding he has also been involved in the construction of large inorganic macrocycles for potential application as a new class of topological DNA-binding agents known as DNA nanoshuttles.
