Junior Chemistry

Charles E. Fawsitt Prize
Value: $120
Conditions: Proficiency in Chemistry at both Semester 1 and 2 First Year exams

Levey Scholarship 2
Value: $525
Conditions: Proficiency in either Chemistry IA and B (SSP), or Chemistry 1A and B (Advanced) or Chemistry 1A and B to a student in Science, Arts or Engineering who is proceeding to Intermediate Chemistry.

Levey Scholarship 3
Value: $300
Conditions: As for Levey Scholarship 2


Intermediate Chemistry

Slade Prize
Value: $100
Conditions: For proficiency in the practical component of both a Semester 1 and a Semester 2 Intermediate Chemistry unit of study.

Iredale Prize
Value: $100
Conditions: Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School to a student for outstanding merit in the units of study CHEM2401 or CHEM2911 or CHEM2915 and CHEM2402 or CHEM2912 or CHEM2916.

Arthur Hollis Memorial Prize
Value: $150
Conditions: Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School to the student gaining the combined highest marks in the units of study CHEM2401 or CHEM2911 or CHEM2915 and CHEM2402 or CHEM2912 or CHEM2916.

Australia-USA Foundation Prize
Value: $250
Conditions: Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School to the student enrolled in either CHEM2402 or CHEM2912 or CHEM2916 who has previously passed CHEM2401 or CHEM2911 or CHEM2915 and whose result shows the most improvement over his/her final semester Junior Chemistry result. The student must be proceeding to Senior Chemistry and must have achieved at least a Credit in CHEM2402 or CHEM2912 or CHEM2916.


Senior Chemistry

Walter Burfitt Scholarship No. 1
Value: $750
Conditions: Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School, for proficiency in both the Semester 1 and 2 examinations in Senior Chemistry. Must be a Science student proceeding to Chemistry Honours.

G S Caird Scholarships (3)
Value: $1,290
Conditions: Three scholarships may be awarded on the basis of both Semester 1 and 2 examinations in Senior Chemistry to students undertaking Honours projects involving each of Inorganic, Organic, Physical/Theoretical Chemistry, providing their work is of sufficient merit.

Frank E. Dixon Scholarship
Value: $750
Conditions: Awarded annually on basis of both Semester 1 and 2 Senior Chemistry examinations. Must be a Science student proceeding to Chemistry Honours.

Inglis Hudson Scholarship (3)
Value: One at $380 (major); Two at $190
Conditions: Awarded on the results of both Semester 1 and 2 Senior Chemistry examinations in the Faculty of Science. Recipients must be undertaking Honours projects involving Organic Chemistry.

Hush Prize
Value: $350
Conditions: Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Chemistry for outstanding performance in Senior Chemistry by a student proceeding on to an Honours year in Theoretical Chemistry.

RJW Le Fèvre-DAASN Rao Prize for Physical Chemistry
Value: $230
Conditions: Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School and the Professors and Associate Professors in Physical Chemistry to the student with the most outstanding performance in Physical Chemistry at the Senior Chemistry level and who is entering Honours in the area of Physical Chemistry.

Honours

Janet Elspeth Crawford Prize in Chemistry
Value: $1,500
Conditions: For the most proficient female student who has completed Chemistry Honours. Degree must be at least Honours 21. Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School. N.B. The top student must be nominated.


C.H. Wilson Prize
Value: $120
Conditions: Awarded to the student graduating in first position with First Class Honours in the area of Organic Chemistry. If no First Class Honours are awarded, the income for the year is to become part of the principal. N.B. The top student must be nominated.


Edna Maude Goulston Prize in Organic Chemistry
Value: $375
Conditions: Awarded annually to the Chemistry Honours students gaining the highest mark in the Organic coursework module, provided that the student’s work is of sufficient merit.

Agnes Campbell Honours Prizes
Value: Varies up to $2,500
Conditions: For excellence in Organic Chemistry


Postgraduate

George Harris Scholarships (3)
Value: $400 each
Conditions: Awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science on the recommendation of the George Harris Selection Committee (comprising the Head of School or delegate; the Associate Head (Teaching); the Associate Head (Research); the Director for Posgraduate Studies; the Postgraduate Coordinator; and up to two additional Professors of Chemistry coopted by the Committee) to a student who has completed two years study towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy for their contribution to the research and teaching activities in the School of Chemistry, provided the candidates contributions are of sufficient merit.

Agnes Campbell Postgraduate Prizes
Value: Varies up to $2,500
Conditions: For excellence in Organic Chemistry
John A Lamberton Research Scholarships
Established in 2004 by donations totalling $1,000,000 from the widow of John A Lamberton, these Scholarships are to provide financial support for postgraduate scholars of exceptional ability who are working toward higher degrees at the University of Sydney in areas emanating from and inspired by the work of Dr John A Lamberton or in the area of science aimed at chemical understanding of brain function and malfunction. Scholarships shall be awarded in two categories:
(1) Areas emanating from and inspired by the work of Dr John A Lamberton (whose main research interests were in the chemistry of many classes of natural products, especially alkaloids) leading to greater understanding of the relationships between chemical structure and biological activity.
(2) Areas of science aimed at the chemical understanding of brain function and malfunction.
Depending on available funding and the number of successful applicants, Scholarships shall either provide a full stipend valued at or above the APA rate of $19, 231 or shall be Supplementary Scholarships.

The R J W Le Fèvre Research Travelling Scholarship
The aim of this scholarship is to give an outstanding female postgraduate student enrolled in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney the opportunity to present a paper or poster dealing with her research at a major international conference. One or more scholarships shall be awarded each year, unless in the view of the Selection Committee there are no applications of sufficient merit.  Subject to the funds available, the value of each scholarship shall be determined by the Selection Committee to take into account the travel, conference and subsistence expenses of the student.    

Bruce Veness Chandler Research Support Scholarship in Food Chemistry
The aim of this scholarship is to provide funding for research support for postgraduate candidates working in the field of Food Chemistry in the School of Chemistry. Applicants must be enrolled on a full-time basis in a higher research degree in the School and working in the area of Food Chemistry. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of the importance of the research funding sought to the applicant’s candidature; academic excellence and outstanding research potential. The number and value of the Scholarships shall be determined by the Selection Committee and shall depend on the funds available, the merit of the applications and the amount of research support sought by the applicant.

Surface Coatings Association Australia Scholarship
The aim of the Surface Coatings Association Australia Top-up Scholarship is to foster the further advancement of education in coating fields. Students enrolled in a postgraduate degree within the School of Chemistry, University of Sydney and working in the area of surface coatings (including pigments, polymers, corrosion, weathering, adhesion and methods of manufacture) are eligible to apply. Students must also be a current holder of a postgraduate scholarship. The scholarship is for one year and is valued at $1,500.
