Wednesday 11 February - Thursday 19 February 2009
This course is for students who are entering a tertiary institution and intend to take a first year Chemistry course without having completed HSC level Chemistry. Students who have done HSC level chemistry are also welcome to come along and refresh their memory. There will be 14 sessions. Every day there will be 2 sessions each consisting of a 1-hour lecture followed by a 2-hour small group tutorial. Topics include:
Elements, compounds and mixtures
The structure of atoms
Ionic compounds: formation, formulae and naming
Covalent bonding, valency, molecular shapes
Chemical equations, precipitation reactions
Reactions involving acids
Chemical calculations: atomic and formula weights,
% composition, empirical formulae, stoichiometry,
solution stoichiometry
The Periodic Table
Acids and Bases
The course is structured as a series of lectures, each followed by a small group tutorial, based on 13 topics which relate to fundamental chemical principles. The seven day course is very intensive and has been found to provide a sound basis for study for first year chemistry.
The outline and course material are available on-line so that intending students can prepare in advance. In particular, the first few topics of the Bridging Course require a lot of rote learning because a sound knowledge of chemical formulas is the first essential to later topics involving, for example, chemical calculations. Spending some time on at least the first few topics well beforehand will be of great benefit to students at the start of the course. To view the course notes, click here.
The course will run week days from Wednesday 11th to Thursday 19th February 2009 (7 days not including the weekend).
9:30am - 4:30pm (but must attend at 9am on Wednesday 11 February for registration). All lectures and tutorials will be held in the School of Chemistry Building.
Course Fee: $300 (incl. GST)
